The Denver Broncos come to Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati Sun., Aug. 15 to clash with the defending AFC Central Division champion Bengals in one of the more interesting preseason matchups in the NFL.
Cincinnati should be an improved and hungry team in 2010, especially after dropping a bitter home playoff game to the New York Jets after winning the always tough AFC Central with a 10-6 record.
After winning the division but then losing its first playoff game didn't set too well with anyone in Cincinnati in 2009 and rest assured, the Bengals took appropriate action in addressing its needs to make another run for it's second straight division title but also challenge -- among others -- the Ravens, Chargers for the AFC title in 2010.
The statistics told the story of the ineptness of the Bengals offense in 2009 -- 19.1 ppg average was a woeful 22nd in the league; 24th in overall yards gained; and a particularly embarrassing 26th in the NFL for passing yards.
With Chad Ochocinco at wideout and the recent signing of All-Pro and much-traveled Terrell Owens, the Bengals will certainly have one of the best 1-2 receiver duos in the NFL as Cincinnati's passing attack should be light years improved. Kansas rookie wideout Dezmon Brisco could also add to the mix with Ochocinco and T.O.
Josh McDaniels enters his second season as head coach of the Broncos and had quickly better find a much more consistent path to success than the roller-coaster ride the Bronocs embarked on in the 2009 NFL season.
After a sizzling 6-0 start, Denver's magic ran out midseason as McDaniels' crew was outplayed for the second-half of the season in a woeful 2-8 end to the season and no postseason berth.
The 6-0 start for the Broncos granted was a surprise but the way in which Denver folded was equally as shocking as it appeared the Broncos may be the AFC frontrunner for the Super Bowl only to close out and miss the playoffs altogether.
Denver made waves across the NFL when the team drafted former Florida Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow in the offseason as the 6-3, 240-pound hybrid player hopes to prove he can play and win in the NFL as a quarterback. With Tebow, there's no question about his toughness and leadership, both outstanding, but can he prove he can master the NFL game as a quarterback remains to be seen.
